The front gate of Penghu Prefecture
Since the Qing government was gradually transforming Penghu from a special military zone into an ordinary
county, it replaced “Xunjian” (a border military office) with “Tongpan” (a civil office) in 1727. After Penghu Island
Prefecture was established, the Qing government renovated the compound, revamping it into the “Administrative
Office of General Military”, which is the building in the photo. The Japanese government continued to use this
building after taking over Taiwan, as the “Penghu Prefectural Government Building.”
