A brief history of the Wangan Branch:
Ÿ Data before 1896 are not available due to a lack of investigation.
Ÿ A Keisatsu (police force) was set up in July 1897.
Ÿ In June 1898, the government abolished the use of “Keisatsu” (literally “the police” in Japanese) as of July 1st
and renamed all police departments “Shuchosho” (literally “police outpost”), according to Paragraph 3, Article
33 of the Local Governmental Organization of the Government-General of Taiwan under Edict No. 108.
Ÿ Following reform of the organization of local governments, the Wangan Shuchosho was abolished on November
11, 1901, and the Wangan Branch of Penghu Prefecture was set up on November 14th of the same year.
Ÿ The Wangan Branch underwent another name change on September 1, 1920, following another reform of the
organization of local governments; it was renamed the “Kaohsiung Prefecture Penghu County Police
Department Branch.”
Ÿ The Penghu Prefecture Wangan Branch was established on July 1, 1926 (Note: The date was June 31st in the
original Japanese text), following the amendment to Article 1 of the Local Governmental Organization of the
Government-General of Taiwan by Edict No. 180. The first Branch Director was Mizukoshi Chiyokichi from
Yamagata Prefecture in Japan. His successor was Matsuda Yukiya from Mie Prefecture.
