|Penghu Hospital|
The Penghu Island Hospital was founded in June 1896 in Magong and
affiliated to Penghu Prefecture. However, following systemic reform of the
government in May 1897, the hospital became directly affiliated to the
Government-General of Taiwan, with its name changed to the “Penghu Hospital of
Taiwan Government-General” on June 18, 1898.
Sawada Sogoro, a contract doctor of the army, was transferred to the hospital
and became its superintendent in March 1908. Sawada continued to serve at the
hospital until March 1916 with remarkable dedication. The building you see now
was constructed in 1914 and featured two primary rooms (with a capacity of two
patients), three secondary rooms (with a capacity of 6 patients), and 12 tertiary
rooms (with a capacity of 28 patients). The superintendent is Hatakeyama
Nagasaku, accompanied by Director Oota Gingoro of General Affairs, physician
Yamamiya Chuuzo, and pharmacist Ueno Keiji.
