Online travel platform Booking.com has announced the winners of its Traveller Review Awards 2026, recognizing Magong City in Penghu as one of the World's Most Welcoming Cities for 2026. Magong also ranked as Taiwan's Most Welcoming City, while Penghu County was named Taiwan's Most Welcoming Destination, highlighting the strong recognition international travelers have given to the quality of Penghu's tourism services and hospitality.
Speaking at the awards ceremony on June 16, Penghu County Deputy Magistrate Lin Chieh-hsing said the honor represents not only international travelers' recognition of Penghu's tourism quality, but also the highest praise for the long-standing dedication of professionals across the hospitality, dining, transportation, guiding, and tourism service sectors. It is a distinction shared by all the people of Penghu.
Lin noted that Penghu's hospitality goes far beyond professional and attentive service. It is rooted in the warmth, sincerity, and friendliness that come naturally to its residents. Generations of islanders have endured the challenges of island life and the northeast monsoon by supporting one another, fostering a culture of mutual care that continues to shape Penghu's welcoming spirit toward every visitor.
Under the leadership of Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu, the Penghu County Government has continued promoting year-round tourism by combining internationally recognized events with cross-departmental collaboration. Signature events include the Run in Penghu themed road race, the Penghu International Triathlon, the Penghu International Fireworks Festival, Penghu Oceanman, and the Penghu Grand March. Together with tourism industry upgrades, precision marketing, and improved transportation capacity, these initiatives have helped overturn the perception that Penghu is only a summer destination. Penghu welcomed a steady 1.07 million visitors last year, while visitor arrivals during the first quarter of this year increased by nearly 17% compared with the same period last year, demonstrating the resilience and growth potential of the local tourism industry.
Lin also emphasized that, beyond its spectacular natural scenery and rich cultural heritage, Penghu has actively promoted immersive travel experiences. Guided by local experts, visitors are invited to explore historic settlements such as Erkan in Xiyu, Huazhai in Wang'an, and Nanliao in Huxi, where they can learn about traditional stone weirs, experience century-old cooperative fishing practices, and appreciate the warmth of the island's communities. Local accommodation providers also serve as ambassadors for Penghu by introducing guests to hidden attractions, local cuisine, and community stories, creating memorable travel experiences.
Lin added that many international visitors have remarked that simply turning a corner in Magong can reveal centuries-old temples, historic streets, and breathtaking ocean views. Even when asking for directions, travelers often find that local residents do more than point the way—they personally accompany visitors to their destinations. These seemingly ordinary acts of kindness have become one of Penghu's most treasured and unforgettable qualities.
Looking ahead, the Penghu County Government will continue working closely with the tourism industry to enhance premium travel services, build a more visitor-friendly digital environment, and create experiences that better meet travelers' needs. By further strengthening the value of its World's Most Welcoming City brand, Penghu aims to welcome even more visitors from Taiwan and around the world to discover—and fall in love with—its warm and inspiring island communities.
