|Guanyin Temple|
The Temple sits on the periphery of the North Gate of Magong Castle. It was built
in 1696 by Xue Kui, a commander of a guerilla brigade, to worship Nanhai Guanyin.
The Temple was repaired in 1764 and was used to feature statues of the Eighteen
Arhats and other ceremonial instruments, but French soldiers looted them during the
Sino-French War. The Penghu Prefecture Archive described the Temple as “being
surrounded by fog, while boasting calming scenery.” The Taiwan Prefecture Archive
also praised the Temple for its wells and the clean water inside, describing that “the two
wells in front of the Temple were the best in Penghu.”
Battered by wind and rain, the Temple had become dilapidated, so the people of
Magong Town and sponsors of the Temple donated funds for a renovation in 1927. A
fountain was built in front of the Temple with a pavilion standing in the middle, adding
a touch of elegance. The Temple is a good choice for a walk during the summer,
attracting many to come strolling around.
