Which dreamed it?
On the midnight of May 20, 1949, martial law was imposed across Taiwan Province. Keelung, Kaohsiung, and Magong remained conditionally open under supervision, while other ports were closed except for authorized domestic routes. At the entrance of Magong Bay, a curfew chain with an anti-submarine net was set up from Fenggui to Jinguitou (Golden Turtle Headland). Today, its relics symbolize the fine line between dictatorship and freedom.
In the 1970s, after the Vietnam War, Taiwan hosted Vietnamese refugees for humanitarian reasons. Two refugee camps were established: one in Zhuwan Village, Xiyu Township (1977-1979) and the other in Jiangmei Village, Baisha Township (1978-1988). The Taiwan Strait (also known as the Black Ditch) somehow separated Penghu from Taiwan, making it a haven for political asylum.
