A Spirits’ Dinner Party

The area around Snakehead Hill was nicknamed “Haunted Town of Foreigners” owing to the French Soldiers’ graveyard nearby. Rumors said one can hear military commands in unfamiliar languages and horses galloping there every night. To pacify these turbulences, the deity at Fenggui’s Weng Wang Temple instructed that a table of feast must be prepared for these spirits in the annual Ghost Festival.
The Dutch, the French, and the Japanese, whichever the sacrificed people used to be, they were forever left in Penghu, a remote archipelago. Luckily, in the seventh lunar month every year, Fenggui villagers invite these spirits of various countries and ages to the ghost festival. This table of feast is an agreement of peace and empathy between the live, the death, and the deity.
