Mazu, as one of the sea gods worshiped in Penghu, provides mental support to the residents and sailors, and has witnessed many historical moments: the retreat of Wybrand van Warwick, the Dutch fortress on the edge of Fonggui, Kuoxinga's military deployment, and the year when admiral Shi Lang conquered Taiwan.
In 1670, a book "Gedenkwaerdig bedryf der Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Maetschappye, op de kuste en in het keizerrijk van Taising of Sina " published in Dutch, which included a piece of print describing Mazu's worship. The author, Olfert Dapper, had never visited Asia, but he used his imagination to depict Taiwan's local customs and culture.
