Sailors of Red Hearts, Red Heads

Located on the outskirts of the Ming Empire, the Penghu Islands were considered valuable roulette chips in the great casino of the ocean. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) sent Wybrand van Warwijck in 1604 and Cornelis Reyersen in 1622 to occupy positions in Penghu. Reyersen built “Het Fort, Péou (Piscadore)”at Snakehead Hill on the northern edge of Fenggui, facing Ná̤u-mâ Temple (now known as the Mazu Temple or Tianhou Temple).
The Chinese sometimes clashed with, and sometimes traded with the Dutch, who had different hair and skin colors. Wherever they came from, whoever they were, only those with bravery could earn a secure place after the journey across the vast sea.
