跌進風櫃洞 Down the Fenggui Blowholes
“As the wind rises and tides swell, huge waves surge. Sand burst out from the caverns, shooting dozens of feet high in the sky like a loach spouts foam. With the wind roars, waves spray with might. Fenghui (Blast furnace) is how the locals call this stunning sight.” -- Excerpt from “History and Topography of Penghu”, Lin, Hao, 1891
Fenggui was named after the "Fenggui Blowholes," a geological spot south of the village. To the north of it is Snakehead Hill, a high ground opposite Jinguitou (the Golden Turtle Headland) of Magong Bay. The Dutch East India Company built a fortress here, the French fleet occupied it, the Japanese cruiser Matsushima exploded here, and the ROC Navy set up an anti-submarine net from here. Whatever it was, now it is a must-see place for tourists.
