Editorial Mission Statement
An Overview of Penghu was edited by Ibara Isaburō (1932), printed on November 15th,
1932 and published on November 25th later that same year. Two-month photograph shooting
and 263 photographs brought out this precious visual documentation of Penghu.
Recently, An Overview of Penghu has been scanned into an e-book by the Cultural Affairs
Bureau of Penghu County Government and translated from Japanese to Chinese and English.
The original Japanese version has been thoroughly scanned, yet a digital color restoration was
needed since the paper had yellowed and got damp with age. The Chinese translation was
retrieved from Coral Quarterly Journal, No. 26 to No. 32, which was published by Mr. Cheng
Shao-chiu. The great help from Mr. Hsu Yu-He, Gao Chi-Jing, Chen Yin-Jun and Tsai Guan-Ting
who proofread and revised the texts is largely appreciated. As to the English version, the
Szuyuan Translation Service Center of Wenzao Ursuline College of Language was
commissioned for the translation which has then been proofread by a local English teacher, Ms.
Lin Jun-Ling, in order to vividly represent the atmosphere of the place and to precisely interpret
the customary phrases and living habits at stake in Penghu. With this book, English readers will
find themselves immersed in the past of Penghu, its history and its culture.
An Overview of Penghu is the most significant documentary book describing Penghu during
the Japanese colonial era. With its publication, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Penghu County
Government is expecting people to have a better understanding of Penghu during the Japanese
colonial era. The purpose of the project to transform the archived documentation into an e-book
is to make it accessible to the general public.
