Lai Fen-Wei and county officials visited Penghu’s four major battlefields in Xiyu

    On January 16, Penghu County Magistrate Lai Feng-Wei along with his highest-level officials completed a tour of Penghu’s four major historical battlefields visiting Xiyu Wai’an Lighthouse, Eastern Battery, Penghu Ammunition Storage and Zhenhai Old Town. Magistrate Lai stated that as Penghu is blessed with in-depth cultural resources. The idea of having 2020 as the Year of Cultural Tourism is to integrate Penghu’s historical monuments/battlefields into a package and to proactively promote cultural tourism in order to attract more international visitors and create tourism opportunities.

    In the history of Penghu, there were four major battles between Ming Dynasty and the Netherlands; during the Ming and Qing dynasties; between Qing Dynasty and France; between Qing Dynasty and Japan. On January 2, Magistrate Lai led a group of county government officials to visit Tianhou Temple, Magong Chenghuang Temple, Guanyin Pagoda, Wen’ao Chenghuan Temple, Shetou Mountain, Lintou, and on January 16, Xiyu Wai’an Lighthouse, Eastern Battery, Penghu Ammunition Storage and Zhenhai Old Town. The site visits were intended to gain further understanding of the history and stories behind these four major battlefields.

    Magistrate Lai stated that in addition to beautiful natural landscapes Penghu is also blessed with abundant cultural assets. In the aforementioned four battlefields many ruins/relics have been conserved including the stele of “Shen YoRong Expelled Wybrand van Warwijck”, as well as the Zhenhai Old Town ruins, Gongbei, JinGuiTou, Eastern and Western new-style batteries built by the inspector-general, Liu MingChuan. They have all become Penghu’s travel highlights that can repeatedly bring in tourists.

    Magistrate Lai said that culture can generate business opportunity for tourism. Penghu has preserved diverse historical, cultural landscapes and remains. With packaging and marketing, these historical tourist attractions will become more appealing. The focus will be on creating travel itineraries with deep cultural content and establishing sustainable development for Penghu’s travel and tourism.
