French Office in Taipei Director Benoit Guidee, accompanied by his office’s Political Affairs, Press and Communication Section Head Anne Rulliat, visited Penghu County Commissioner Chen Kuang-fu in his office at the county government building on Dec. 6. He came in person to invite Commissioner Chen to attend the annual meeting of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club, which is to be held in France next April, visit smart cities in France and experience green energy development there, and take advantage of the occasion to publicize the beautiful scenery of Penghu to the French people. In response, Chen said France’s technological development is among the top in the world and that he hopes to see Penghu have further exchanges with France in the development of green energy and smart cities in the future.

Given that the annual meeting of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club, originally scheduled to take place this year, has been rescheduled to next April, Guidee, in his meeting with Commissioner Chen on Dec. 6, expressed a wish to establish contact links between the two sides while inviting Chen to visit France next year. He showed a willingness to help coordinate and arrange Chen’s visit to France. Guidee said Penghu and Vannes, France, are similar geographically and that the challenges they are faced with are also similar. Vannes has successfully developed a smart grid, an experience which Penghu can use as a reference in its development of green energy in the years to come. It is also a great opportunity to introduce Penghu to the French people and let them have a look at the beauty of Penghu.

Chen noted that by 2025, the central government will have spent NT$45 billion on developing Penghu into an internationally-renowned tourist destination and a smart island with advanced medical facilities. The goal is to enable Penghu to produce all of its electricity from renewable energy resources and become a 100% green energy island with the largest population among its equivalents. He added that Penghu and France are historically connected and that he hopes the two sides will deepen their cooperation in the development of smart cities and green energy.

Also present in the meeting were Penghu County Commissioner’s Office Director Wu Teng-tsung, Penghu County Government Advisory Officer Hung Tung-lin, Penghu County Tourism Department Director Hung Ching-chiu, and Penghu County Economic Affairs Department Director Hsueh Hung-ying. The two sides exchanged opinions on issues including green energy and the most beautiful bay event.
